Pretty offering’s do make this reviewer a happy chap, and each and every plate that arrived at the table with a level of presentation that I’ve rarely seen in restaurants in London. Befitting it’s great location, crisp white & bright surroundings are fronted by very large windows sliding open in the summer to offer al fresco views of a corner Clapham Common.
Looking at the menu there was very little you would turn down out of hand – the descriptions of each selection of nourishment on show got the senses tingling nicely.
To start we went for a seemingly all day brunch offering of quails eggs, sweet cured pork, and a length of crackling that created a fantastic medley for all the senses. The other initial course was a beautifully crisp scotch egg, light and airy with perfectly cooked asparagus lying on a Mackerel.
The main event carried on the joy with a meat patchwork of Ox Cheek, calves liver, sweet breads, and a wonderful a red wine reduction. Alongside my choice Katie selected an incredibly well cooked piece of Halibut, laid on samphire, with a lovely pea sauce. A very balanced dish without doubt.
Moving onto the desserts there again was a much a feast for the eyes as there were for the taste buds. Caramelised bananas with rum and raisin ice cream, honeycomb and a brandy-snap was a sublime combination…. only topped by the imaginative nature of the meringue ball, with passion fruit inside. We matched both puddings with some liquor like dessert wines – very sweet and a good supplement to the high end flavours on offer.
Overall the thoughtfulness that went into assembling all aspects of the dishes was apparent – clever artistry combining with well sourced ingredients and enterprising presentation. The only downside was that half of the dishes were only luke-warm. If they had been hot on delivery then the review here would have near faultless, a rival for Chez Bruce down the road, but this aspect did unfortunately let Trinity down in the final assessment.
I will however give Trinity another go at some point, I cannot seem to believe a restaurant considered in such high regard would serve merely warm food. Every other aspect including the excellent service was definitely up to scratch.
