Twas the night before Christmas, not a creature was stirring… except the three people loitering outside waiting for a table… There might be a few places more tucked-away and inconspicuous, but probably not many more than this quaint Lebanese eatery.
Back in December a couple of friends and I went back for the second time to this fine little taste of the Med. We turned up a little earlier in anticipation of the inevitable busyness and sat outside warming our palms with some mulled wine from the bar.
The size of this place certainly leads to a few apologies being given to the other patrons as you bump and rub shoulders; but the smells of gastronomy as you walk in, and the fine looking plates of food dotted around leave a great street food atmosphere.
They don’t take advanced bookings so you have to time your visit well, but when we were seated we went straight in for a carafe of the Petit Chenin, this being accompanied by some olives and pickles. We also went for the mezze dishes of Hommos and some Baba Ghannouj. Both starters were delicious, such simple foods but really well delivered, moreish and hearty grub.
On the back wall they have a massive chalk board full of all manner of variety of wraps, mezze and other fresh produce. We mostly ordered off the main menu going for the Lamb Casserole, Lahem Meshoue and the Lamb Shawarma – (I guess we were all feeling the love of Lamb that day) The casserole possessed a fine balance of flavours, with a hints of warm spices giving a rewarding meal, the Meshoue skewers seemed less pronounced in flavours, but still ticked all the boxes, and the sheer portion size of the Shawarma could feed armies and leave them more than happy.
For such a small bill at the end of the night the meal was good value, but Lebanese food is a great experience frankly. You can have a hearty monster of a meal or go for a wide ranging tapas mezze meal. I’m fairly sure most won’t be disappointed at all, and being set right in the heart of Soho its a great start to an evening before going on elsewhere.
